This open space loft in Philadelphia was actually once a shoe factory. Hints of its industrial past are visible in the extremely tall ceilings as well as the exposed ductwork and electrical conduit. We were able to use the height of ceilings to gain adequate storage in what is not a large square foot floor plan. In the effort to use every cubic inch of storage as well as we could, some simple accessories such as removable drawer divider and built in cutlery trays became even more important than they normally are.
The black island stands out against the original hardwood floors while the bead board detail of the island blends perfectly with the mix of country and industrial décor throughout the space. The white apron front “farm-sink” continues the mesh of industrial and country as well as the mixture of traditional and modern that is further reinforced by the stainless steel appliances.The elevated bar height seating of the island provides the functional aspect of a backsplash for the sink and it also offers visual definition of the kitchen space in this otherwise open area.
